When he stops coming home
to visit
and you have to go to him
He doesn’t love you less
but you’ve done your job
and he is independent and
building his own life.
As small as the world has become
the physical distance between you
feels like earth to the moon.
There will always be a place for him
to land, exhale
but he has the same ties
as you now
to a job
and a place
and a person
everything but the dog…
and that will come.
