Believe Me

Writer: Ruth Lee Ruth Lee

How far will you walk with me in faith?

If I reach out my hand, will you take it—

step out on the water and dance?

I’m no one to trust, God knows,

and never claimed to be,

but take my hand, love, and we’ll dance on the sea

I know the secret of life, heaven knows,

but so do the devils—let’s face it—

and they package it up in warm wool they call faith,

claiming to keep you safe from the sea.

But devils’ cold comfort won’t help you to dance—

light foot on the waves I’ll teach you to be

Feel the wind—stand and taste it—

feel the waves—join their dance.

Look into my eyes if you’re needing more faith.

I am the word of both land and sea

and for all this world knows,

I ever will be

Lift your feet light then—let loose in the dance.

Solid as prayer is this sea;

solid as prayer as we step out in faith;

solid as prayer we must be…

What the wind whispers, the faithful one knows—

here is my hand, love, take it

As you first learned to walk, now learn to dance—

I’ll teach you the steps in good faith,

lead you wave by wave over forgiving sea.

How far we’ll go, God only knows,

seeking home where e’er it may be—

we’ll know it for home when we find it

Keep your eyes on me, love, not down on the sea.

The strength in my hand…focus upon it.

Leave your old life behind you—just let it be.

It served well enough, goodness knows,

but this is a time that calls for new faith.

Step out on the water—take my hand—dance

How far will faith take us out on the sea?

How far will you let it lead you in dance?

Love’s a miracle, God knows—in faith, let it be.
